YouTube Pays $24.5 Million to Settle Trump's Jan. 6 Suspension Lawsuit

On September 29, 2025, YouTube agreed to pay $24.5 million to resolve a 2021 lawsuit President Trump filed after the platform suspended his account following the January 6, 2021 Capitol attack. Of that total, $22 million will go to the Trust for the National Mall to help fund construction of the White House State Ballroom, with the remaining $2.5 million going to other plaintiffs including the American Conservative Union.

The settlement follows similar payouts from Meta and X, which settled comparable suspension lawsuits with Trump after he returned to office. Critics say the arrangement illustrates how litigation brought by a sitting president against a major platform can be resolved with a payment that benefits the president's own priorities, rather than through a neutral legal process untethered from his office.

YouTube did not admit wrongdoing, and the company framed the settlement as a business decision to end a long-running dispute. Trump publicly celebrated the outcome as vindication against what he called Big Tech censorship, while watchdogs noted the unusual precedent of a technology company funding a presidential construction project as part of a legal settlement.
