White House Weighs Permanent Fencing Around Lafayette Square and Pennsylvania Avenue

Trump administration officials are discussing a plan to install permanent fencing along the block of Pennsylvania Avenue in front of the White House and around Lafayette Square, according to sources who spoke to CBS News on July 10, 2026; The Washington Post first reported the proposal. The fencing would run near 15th and 17th Streets NW, and under the plan the Secret Service and White House would retain the ability to open and close sections as needed. Officials are reportedly considering repurposing existing event fencing rather than buying a new perimeter. The stated rationale is security and the recurring cost of erecting and removing temporary barriers, following a shooting near the complex in late May.

Pennsylvania Avenue in front of the White House and Lafayette Square are among the most symbolically significant public and protest spaces in the country; permanently enclosing them would be a durable change to public access to the presidential complex. Lafayette Square was the site of the 2020 clearing of protesters ahead of a presidential photo opportunity.

The proposal is preliminary. No decision had been finalized as of July 10, no contractors have been hired, and it awaits the president's approval. A White House official said "nothing is confirmed at this time."
