Watchdog Groups Accuse Trump Administration of Spending Millions on Taxpayer-Funded Political Ads

Two ethics groups filed complaints in late September 2026 over taxpayer-funded ads promoting the administration. CREW filed September 30 over CBP ads airing since September 23 about "defeating communism in America," closing with "paid for by the U.S. government." CREW put CBP's spending at $1.4 million to $20 million for over 2,000 airings, alleging violations of the Antideficiency Act, the Purpose Statute, and a ban on federal "publicity or propaganda." Public Citizen separately filed complaints September 29 with the FCC, FTC, GAO and Office of Special Counsel over a second ad promoting Trump's presidency in competitive midterm media markets.

Spending appropriated funds on ads promoting an administration's political fortunes, rather than informing the public about a program, is what federal propaganda statutes are meant to prevent. Two complaints in a week, to different agencies, suggest a pattern, not one ad.

Both complaints are pending; no enforcement action or administration response had been reported as of early October, and the ads continued airing after the filings.
