Video Analysis Raises Questions About the DHS Account of the Houston ICE Shooting

Surveillance and bystander video reviewed by news organizations shows ICE officers in unmarked vehicles pursuing the work van driven by Lorenzo Salgado Araujo through a Houston neighborhood on the morning of July 7, 2026, shortly before an officer shot and killed him. DHS has said officers were seeking a different person, that Salgado Araujo ignored commands and rammed an ICE vehicle, and that an officer fired in self-defense. The footage published so far does not capture the shooting itself and does not confirm the ramming; men who were in the van have given accounts that conflict with the DHS description. DHS has said the officers involved were not wearing body cameras, has declined to name the officer who fired, and has released no footage. The DHS Inspector General is investigating, and the Harris County District Attorney has said his office is pursuing the investigative avenues available to it.

The evidentiary gap matters beyond a single case. With no body cameras, no agency footage released, and no charges brought in any of the deaths recorded during the immigration enforcement campaign, the public record depends on whatever bystanders happen to film. The Associated Press has noted that in several earlier shootings, video contradicted the accounts given by federal officers.

The investigations remain open. No findings have been released and no officer has been charged.
