Vance Announces Removal of 760,000 ACA Enrollees Over Fraud Claims

On Sept. 22, 2026, Vice President JD Vance and other officials announced the cancellation of roughly 315,000 ACA enrollments -- covering about 760,000 people -- alleging the enrollees were fraudulently signed up or do not exist. Officials said the government had not verified eligibility and that ending the associated subsidies would save $2.2 billion. The administration said 419,000 more enrollments would face additional verification, and suspended new agents and brokers who sign up enrollees for six months, saying they account for a disproportionate share of the fraud.

The mass cancellation lands amid a broader administration push to tighten ACA enrollment ahead of the exchanges' open-enrollment period, and comes as Democrats have made preserving ACA subsidies a central demand in the government-funding fight. Consumer advocates warn that aggressive fraud sweeps risk stripping coverage from eligible people along with fraudulent ones.

The cancellations are being implemented. No independent audit of the administration's fraud figures had been published as of this writing.
