Trump's Tariffs Haven't Shrunk the Trade Deficit — It's Widest Since 'Liberation Day'
The U.S. trade deficit widened to $105.6 billion in August 2026, a 13.7% jump from July's revised $92.8 billion and the largest monthly gap since Trump's April 2025 "Liberation Day" tariffs took effect, according to Census Bureau and Bureau of Economic Analysis data reported Oct. 6-7, 2026. Imports rose 4.3% to $420.8 billion while exports grew more slowly, up 2.2% to $205.7 billion.
Trump had called the trade deficit a "national emergency" threatening "our very way of life" when he imposed the tariffs, arguing they would shrink the gap. Economists cited in the reporting said frequent changes to tariff rates have instead discouraged companies from restructuring supply chains, and that a separate AI-hardware import surge has also widened the deficit. A White House spokesperson pointed to record capital-goods imports as evidence of a manufacturing resurgence.
The figures mark a setback for one of the tariff program's core stated goals, though the administration maintains the broader policy is working as intended.
