U.S. Digital Service Reorganized and Renamed U.S. DOGE Service

On January 20, 2025, an executive order reorganized the U.S. Digital Service, a low-profile technology agency created under the Obama administration, into the U.S. DOGE Service (USDS), keeping the acronym but changing its meaning to Department of Government Efficiency. The order placed the renamed agency within the Executive Office of the President as a temporary organization set to sunset on July 4, 2026, with a mandate covering a government-wide Software Modernization Initiative.

The rebrand went beyond a name change: DOGE was given an expanded mission to pursue cost-cutting and reduce what the administration calls bureaucratic bloat, under leadership aligned with Elon Musk and the White House. That is a significant departure from the original Digital Service's narrower focus on fixing federal IT problems.

The reorganization set the stage for DOGE's subsequent, more consequential actions across the federal government, including contract reviews, agency dismantlement efforts, and mass workforce reductions carried out later in 2025. It marks the founding action from which those later, separately reported DOGE controversies followed.
