Trump Takes Over the Kennedy Center Board and Ousts Its President

On February 12, 2025, the Kennedy Center's board of trustees, recently reshaped by President Trump's appointees after he dismissed half its members, elected Trump as board chairman and fired longtime president Deborah Rutter, replacing her on an interim basis with Richard Grenell. It was the first time in the institution's history that a sitting president led its board.

The Kennedy Center had long functioned as a bipartisan cultural institution insulated from direct political control. Trump's installation as chairman, combined with the removal of most prior leadership, was widely seen as an unprecedented politicization of a nonpartisan arts organization. Several performers and artistic partners canceled engagements or resigned in protest.

The episode became an early marker of the administration's approach to independent institutions, in which boards and leadership positions across government-adjacent bodies were reconstituted with loyalists. Rutter, who had already announced plans to retire later in 2025, publicly disputed the administration's characterization of her tenure in subsequent interviews.
