Trump Revokes Canada's Invitation to His 'Board of Peace' After Carney's Davos Speech
On the evening of January 23, 2026, President Trump posted on Truth Social that "the Board of Peace is withdrawing its invitation to you regarding Canada's joining," addressing Prime Minister Mark Carney. He gave no reason. The withdrawal followed Carney's Davos speech urging "middle powers" to band together against economic coercion by "greater powers"; Trump responded at Davos that "Canada lives because of the United States." Ottawa had said it would join in principle but would not pay the $1 billion membership fee Trump said permanent members would be asked to contribute.
The Board of Peace is billed by the White House as a new international organization for resolving conflicts, with Trump as chairman for life. About 60 nations were invited and roughly 35 had signed up; none of the other permanent UN Security Council members had committed. Its proposed charter does not mention Gaza, the conflict it was originally framed around, and appears designed to supplant functions of the United Nations.
European Council President António Costa said EU leaders had "serious doubts" about the charter's "scope, its governance and its compatibility with the UN Charter." Spain declined the invitation outright.
