Trump Installs His Former Personal Lawyers Across DOJ and White House

By October 2025, President Trump had placed several of his former personal criminal-defense attorneys into senior Justice Department and White House roles. Todd Blanche and Emil Bove, who both represented Trump in his criminal cases, hold the number-two and number-three positions at DOJ, while Attorney General Pam Bondi previously defended him during his first impeachment trial.

The pattern raises structural concerns distinct from ordinary political appointments: officials whose careers were built defending Trump from prosecution now oversee the agencies responsible for prosecuting others, including matters that touch the president's own interests. Bove, for instance, was involved in the push to drop charges against New York City Mayor Eric Adams.

Supporters say presidents are entitled to appoint trusted allies. Critics argue the scale and concentration of former personal defense counsel in law-enforcement leadership roles blurs the line between defending Trump and directing federal law enforcement, weakening the traditional independence of the Justice Department from the White House.
