Administration Expands Tip Lines and Data Access for Immigration Enforcement

Throughout 2025, the Trump administration expanded tools encouraging the public to report suspected undocumented immigrants, including a longstanding ICE tip line, alongside a broader expansion of data-sharing across federal and state agencies for enforcement purposes. Reporting found that ICE gained access to tax, Social Security and Medicaid records previously walled off from immigration enforcement, along with growing use of drone surveillance and data analytics.

Advocates and civil-rights groups warned that reliance on public tips and expanded data access increases the risk of false reports, racial profiling, and reduced trust between immigrant communities and local institutions, including reduced use of public services by families fearing enforcement contact.

The administration describes these measures as necessary tools for identifying people in the country illegally and says participation in tip programs is voluntary. Critics argue the combination of public reporting incentives and expanded government data access represents a significant expansion of domestic surveillance capacity tied to immigration enforcement.
