Trump Tells Rally Crowd to Send Michigan-Born Senate Candidate 'Back to Where He Came From'

At a Friday, Oct. 30 rally in Daytona Beach, Florida, Trump told the crowd to send Michigan Democratic Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed "back to where he came from," while falsely claiming El-Sayed "does not like" Jewish or Black people. El-Sayed, who would be the first Muslim U.S. senator if elected, was born in Rochester Hills, Michigan, in 1984 to Egyptian immigrant parents.

The remark escalated attacks Trump has leveled against El-Sayed in the campaign's closing days, including calling him a "jihadist" earlier in the week; El-Sayed's Republican opponent, former Rep. Mike Rogers, has separately called him a "risk to our national security." Trump also told Black and Jewish voters at the rally that supporting El-Sayed would mean "you're not smart," a day after calling such voters "crazy" at a separate rally.

The remarks came four days before the Nov. 3 midterms, in which control of the U.S. Senate is being contested in Michigan among other battleground states.
