Trump Bought Up to $5 Million in SpaceX Bonds Two Days Before Boosting Space Policy

Trump's financial disclosure shows his portfolio bought between $1 million and $5 million in SpaceX senior unsecured notes -- 5.35% bonds maturing in July 2031 -- on Aug. 18, 2026. Two days later, on Aug. 20, Trump signed a national security presidential memorandum directing federal agencies to speed up permitting and environmental review for commercial rocket launches, identify new launch sites, and target at least 1,000 U.S. launches and reentries a year by 2030, up from 178 the prior year, about 170 of them flown by SpaceX.

The purchase stood out among Trump's disclosed holdings, which are mostly stocks, both for its size and for its timing just ahead of a policy that stands to benefit the company whose bonds he had just bought. Trump has not placed his assets in a blind trust.

White House spokesman Davis Ingle said the portfolio is run by third-party institutions using index-tracking, discretionary accounts and that "neither Trump nor his family can direct or influence any purchase or sale." He did not say who decided to buy the SpaceX bonds or when the purchase was reported internally.
