Trump Posts an Apparently AI-Generated Video Captioned 'Kharg Island Being Blown to Smithereens' 410 Miles From the Real Strike
Overnight after the Aug. 30 exchange of strikes with Iran, Trump posted what NPR described as an apparently AI-generated video of a large oil facility being hit by missiles, captioned "Kharg Island being blown to smithereens." NPR reported there was no indication Kharg Island had been attacked. Kharg lies about 410 miles west of Larak Island, where the U.S. strikes actually took place.
A presidential post depicting an attack that reportedly did not occur, during an active war and days after new sanctions, carries weight beyond ordinary political messaging: allies, markets and adversaries read the commander in chief's account of what U.S. forces have done as an official signal.
Hamid Bovard, head of the state-run National Iranian Oil Co., dismissed the post, saying conditions on Kharg were calm and that workers were repairing damage from earlier attacks. The White House had not addressed the video as of NPR's report.
