Trump Made Nearly 28,700 Stock Trades While Backing a Ban That Excludes Him

A Bloomberg analysis of financial disclosures published September 15, 2026 found that President Trump, or the money managers overseeing his portfolio, made nearly 28,700 securities trades between his January 2025 inauguration and the end of June 2026, exceeding the roughly 22,200 trades reported collectively by all members of Congress over the same period. The review comes as Trump backs a House-passed bill banning lawmakers from trading individual stocks, a measure that would leave the presidency unrestricted. White House spokesman Davis Ingle said Trump's portfolio is managed independently through computer-based model portfolios and that neither Trump nor his family directs individual trades.

Watchdogs say the volume raises conflict-of-interest concerns regardless of intent: Kedric Payne of the Campaign Legal Center noted officials can still influence a stock's value through official duties. Bloomberg noted Trump bought as much as $1.38 million in DoorDash stock in early 2026, then in April had the company deliver a McDonald's order to the White House as part of a publicized event.

The House ban passed in July applies only to Congress, not the president, and a Senate version extending it to the presidency has stalled, with Republicans on the relevant committee calling it a "publicity show."
