Trump Jr.'s Bahamas Wedding Was Secretly Funded by a Russian Oligarch Close to Putin

ProPublica reported Monday that Russian oligarch Umar Kremlev — secretary general of the International Boxing Association and a Putin ally — secretly paid for a substantial share of Donald Trump Jr.'s May wedding in the Bahamas, including renting a private island and staging fireworks. Trump Jr.'s wife, Bettina Anderson, confirmed on Instagram that Kremlev hosted two nights of post-wedding celebrations as "an extraordinarily generous wedding gift," calling him "our dear friend" and denying any "conspiracy." Trump said in a statement he had "no idea who Umar is, never heard of him," and that Kremlev paid only for a separate afterparty, not the wedding itself.

The arrangement raises conflict-of-interest questions given Kremlev's Kremlin ties and Trump Jr.'s role in his father's orbit. Trump Jr. holds no government position and isn't bound by federal gift rules, but his closeness to the president has repeatedly drawn scrutiny of the family's foreign business ties. CBS News asked the Trump Organization why its executive vice president accepted the gift.

Kremlev's press office told ProPublica the two "have a friendly relationship" formed a couple of years ago and that he "has never discussed political matters" with American friends. No government investigation has been announced.
