Trump Says He Is Giving 'Serious Consideration' to Renaming Lake Ontario 'Lake America' as the Canada Trade War Escalates
Trump wrote on Truth Social on Tuesday that "The United States is giving serious consideration to changing the name of Lake Ontario to Lake America in that we don't expect to doing much business with Ontario any longer," and followed it with an image of a map showing "Lake Ontario" crossed out and "Lake America" in gold lettering. In later posts he called Canada "entitled" and "unreasonable" and said it is "not a State, and will be entitled no longer!" The White House posted an image of a Lego map using both "Lake America" and "Gulf of America."
The post follows the pattern of the Gulf of America order signed on the first day of the term, which U.S. agencies adopted and other countries did not, and which produced a press-access dispute with The Associated Press that a federal judge resolved against the White House.
Canada-U.S. Trade Minister Dominic LeBlanc declined to engage, saying the government decided months ago not to respond to daily social media posts. Canada announced the same day that its matching tariffs take effect Sept. 8.
