Trump Doubles India's Tariffs to 50% as a Penalty for Buying Russian Oil
On August 6, 2025, President Trump signed an executive order imposing an additional 25% tariff on Indian goods as a penalty for India's continued purchases of Russian crude oil, stacking it on top of the 25% rate already applied to Indian imports and bringing the combined duty to 50%. The additional levy took effect on August 27. India's government estimated the measure would hit roughly $48.2 billion of exports, with the heaviest burden falling on labor-intensive sectors including textiles, gems and jewelry, leather goods and food products; pharmaceuticals and some electronics were exempted.
The order applied a trade penalty to one country over its energy purchases from another, using emergency economic authority rather than a trade statute tied to a finding about Indian trade practices. That structure turns tariffs into a general-purpose foreign-policy instrument aimed at a partner the United States spent two decades courting as a counterweight to China, and sets importers' costs by proclamation rather than legislated schedule.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi said India would protect its farmers and small businesses, and New Delhi pursued domestic tax changes and expanded trade ties in Latin America and Africa to reduce dependence on the U.S. market. The rate remained in force through the end of August 2025.
