Trump Calls the Six-Month Iran War "Small Potatoes" and Says He Could See Someone Not Calling It a War at All
In the Oval Office on September 4, 2026, Trump described the conflict with Iran as "small potatoes" and declined to call it a war. "A lot of people don't call it a war. I call it a military conflict because it's small potatoes for us. It's not a big thing," he said, adding that U.S. strikes are "intermittent" and that "there's no fighting." His remarks came a day after Vice President JD Vance said the conflict should not be called a war because major combat operations ended months ago, and the same week the U.S. said it had struck nearly 60 military targets around the Strait of Hormuz. Trump also raised hitting a suspected nuclear site: "We may hit Pickaxe very soon."
The characterization matters beyond rhetoric. A six-month campaign that has killed 18 American service members has proceeded without congressional authorization, and calling it something short of a war is the framing under which that has continued.
