Trump Visits Beijing and Warns Taiwan Against Independence After Meeting Xi

Trump made a state visit to China on May 14 and 15, meeting Xi Jinping in Beijing and at Zhongnanhai. The announced deliverables included Chinese purchases of more than $10 billion in U.S. agricultural products, 200 Boeing aircraft — below the roughly 500 the aviation industry had anticipated — and over 400 GE aerospace engines, plus restored access for U.S. beef. Trump said Xi had committed to keeping the Strait of Hormuz open and opposing an Iranian nuclear weapon; China's own readout mentioned Iran only alongside Ukraine and the Korean Peninsula.

Taiwan was the sharpest point. Xi called it the most important issue between the two countries and warned that mishandling it could produce clashes or conflict; the initial U.S. readout omitted Taiwan entirely. Trump afterward said Xi opposed Taiwanese independence and that "the last thing we want is a war that's 9,500 miles away," prompting Secretary of State Marco Rubio to reaffirm that U.S. policy was unchanged and Trump to reassure Japan and Germany immediately after departing.

Trump invited Xi to the White House for September 24, 2026. Reporting also noted that Eric and Lara Trump joined the trip in a personal capacity while managing the family business holdings.
