Trump Treasury Appointee Asked IRS to Review Mike Lindell's Audit

In April 2025, reporting revealed that David Eisner, a political appointee at the Treasury Department, had written to senior IRS officials asking them to review an audit of MyPillow CEO Mike Lindell, describing him as a "high profile friend of the president" who felt inappropriately targeted. The IRS referred the matter to the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration, the agency's independent watchdog.

Tax experts called the intervention highly unusual, warning that political appointees reaching into IRS enforcement decisions on behalf of a presidential ally undermines the agency's traditional independence from partisan pressure. Lindell, a prominent Trump supporter and election-fraud claimant, disputed the characterization, saying he had only sought help resolving a pandemic-era tax credit dispute.

The episode renewed concerns that under the current administration, agencies designed to operate independently of politics are being nudged to treat well-connected allies differently than ordinary taxpayers.
