Trump Announces $54 Billion South Korea Deal for Alaska LNG -- Seoul Says He Overstated It
Trump announced on September 30, 2026, that South Korea would invest roughly $200 billion in U.S. projects, including $54 billion toward an Alaska LNG pipeline, as part of the tariff agreement reached with Seoul. South Korea's government immediately disputed the figures: Industry Minister Kim Jung-kwan said "no decision has been made on whether to invest or on the size of the investment," and that the announcement "went beyond what had been agreed." The U.S. Commerce Department's own description was narrower, saying the countries agreed only to "commence working" on the project "subject to commercial reasonableness," without a dollar figure. Republican Sen. Dan Sullivan, facing a competitive Alaska reelection race, attended.
Overstating the terms of an unsettled international agreement carries diplomatic as well as political costs: it can publicly commit a foreign government to figures it never agreed to, while giving domestic audiences a rosier account of a deal's status than the facts support.
South Korea said it would review the project's commercial viability and legal compliance before committing further, leaving the scope of its actual investment undetermined as of early October.
