White House Denies Ordering Starshield Slowdown That Disrupted Ukraine's Drone War
Ukrainian officials said this week that connections to SpaceX's military-grade Starshield network slowed sharply on Oct. 13, disrupting drone and missile guidance and leaving at least one unit without early warning before a Russian strike. Service was later restored. Elon Musk said Starshield's speed limits are "controlled by the US government," while the White House said it had not ordered any restriction.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy rejected the idea that the slowdown was a glitch, telling the Financial Times "it was not a technical problem; it was the will." He said officials had separately warned that intelligence-sharing could be curtailed unless Ukraine stopped striking Russian energy facilities, tied to an unannounced energy truce.
Responsibility for the order remains unconfirmed. Ukraine says it is still seeking an explanation from SpaceX.
