Trump Administration Holds Up Patriot Missile Transfers as Ukraine's Stockpile Runs Low

Officials told the Washington Post and the Kyiv Independent the Trump administration has not approved transferring more Patriot interceptor missiles to Ukraine, which a Ukrainian official said has only a handful left as Russia escalates missile and drone strikes. The interceptors come from third countries and need Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth's sign-off for retransfer; officials said Hegseth has not rejected the transfers but has not completed approval, citing stocks strained by the U.S. war with Iran. The reports, published October 19, came as Trump said Zelensky is not helping matters much.

The holdup follows a cooling in Trump's relationship with Zelensky after Ukraine kept striking Russian oil refineries despite White House requests to stop, and after Trump moved to ease U.S. sanctions on Russian diesel exports, raising questions about whether military support is being used as leverage.

Zelensky said Russia fired 16 ballistic missiles overnight without warning and called the blocked deliveries alongside sanctions relief a denial of reality; the administration has not announced a final decision on the transfers.
