Trump Administration Scales Back Tech and Crypto Enforcement

Through 2025, the Trump administration halted, dismissed, or otherwise wound down a substantial number of federal investigations and enforcement actions against technology and cryptocurrency firms, including cases against Binance, Coinbase, Kraken, and others tied to donors or firms with financial ties to the president. The Justice Department dissolved its National Cryptocurrency Enforcement Team, and the SEC dropped or paused multiple crypto-related lawsuits.

This matters because many of the affected companies had donated to Trump's campaign or inaugural committee, or had financial links to Trump-linked ventures such as World Liberty Financial, raising concerns that enforcement decisions were being shaped by political and financial relationships rather than the underlying conduct at issue. Career investigators across the SEC, DOJ, FTC, and Treasury reportedly saw active cases frozen or closed, in some instances learning of the decisions from press reports.

The administration framed the rollback as correcting regulatory overreach that stifled innovation. Critics said the pattern disproportionately benefited politically connected corporations and weakened oversight of a fast-growing, high-risk financial sector.
