Trump Says $5,000 Checks Depend on GOP Win, Acknowledges Cost Tops $1 Trillion
Updated AP reporting on Oct. 20, 2026 found President Trump has made his promised $5,000 "dividend" checks explicitly conditional on Republicans keeping the House and Senate, telling a Kentucky rally the payments are a sure thing: "I always do it." He acknowledged the cost would exceed $1 trillion and said the White House sees trade deals, foreign investment pledges, government equity stakes and oil and mineral agreements as possible funding, though AP reported no legal funding mechanism has been identified.
AP found Republicans are not airing ads on the promise; the few ads referencing it come from Democratic-aligned groups. White House Council of Economic Advisers chairman Christopher Phelan declined to say whether the administration had modeled the checks' economic effect. The pledge follows earlier Trump promises of $2,000 tariff dividends and DOGE savings refunds that AP reported never materialized.
Even some Trump supporters interviewed by AP said they doubted the money would arrive; a September AP-NORC poll found roughly half of registered voters say Trump does not keep his promises.
