Trump's $100 Million-Plus Bond Purchases Raise Conflict-of-Interest Questions
Financial disclosures released around August 20, 2025 showed that President Trump had made roughly 700 bond transactions worth more than $100 million between his January 2025 inauguration and August 1, including bonds from Wells Fargo, Morgan Stanley, Citigroup, Meta, UnitedHealth, T-Mobile, and Home Depot. The filings, made to the Office of Government Ethics, list ranges rather than exact amounts per transaction.
Ethics specialists said the purchases matter because bond values are directly affected by decisions the president controls, including interest-rate pressure on the Federal Reserve, tax policy, and financial regulation. Former White House ethics lawyer Richard Painter noted that Trump's public push for lower interest rates would, if successful, raise the value of his own bond holdings.
Unlike every president since 1978, Trump did not place his assets in a blind trust or limit himself to diversified mutual funds, instead passing management of his business empire to a trust run by his children. The bond disclosures reinforce longstanding concerns that this structure discloses conflicts rather than preventing them.
