White House Announces Privately Funded Ballroom, Naming 'Patriot Donors'

On July 31, 2025, the White House announced plans for a roughly $200 million, 90,000-square-foot ballroom addition, describing it as funded by Trump and unnamed "patriot donors" rather than taxpayers. The project called for replacing the East Wing with a 22,000-square-foot venue capable of seating up to 999 guests, more than triple the capacity of the existing East Room.

The framing of private funding did not resolve ethics concerns. In October 2025, the White House released a list of 37 donors, including major technology and defense contractors such as Apple, Amazon, Meta, Microsoft, Lockheed Martin and Palantir, without disclosing individual contribution amounts. Senate Democrats later demanded greater transparency, citing risks that donors with business before the government could gain undue access or influence.

The project's estimated cost rose over time, from $200 million at announcement to $300 million by October and $400 million by December 2025, ahead of East Wing demolition beginning in October and construction starting the following month. The donor-funding announcement set in motion a project that led to substantial procurement and ethics scrutiny in subsequent months.
