On December 3, 2025, the Trump administration renamed the building housing the U.S. Institute of Peace as the "Donald J. Trump Institute of Peace." The State Department announced the change on social media, calling Trump "the greatest dealmaker" in U.S. history. The rebrand came while the administration was still fighting the institute's former leadership in court over its earlier attempt to dismantle the independent, congressionally chartered organization, which lost most of its staff in a DOGE-driven purge earlier in 2025.

The timing drew criticism from former USIP officials and staff, with an attorney for the group calling the renaming "insult to injury." Critics argued that attaching the president's name to a nonpartisan peacebuilding institution, particularly one still under legal dispute, blurred the line between public mission and personal branding.
