Trump Rolls Back Tariffs on Coffee, Beef and Tropical Fruit

On November 14, 2025, President Trump signed an executive order eliminating tariffs on a range of food imports, including coffee, beef, bananas, tomatoes, cocoa, tea and other tropical fruits, after months of rising grocery prices became a dominant political issue. The White House described the move as helping affordability without abandoning its broader tariff strategy.

The reversal came shortly after off-year elections in which affordability had displaced immigration as the top voter concern, with Democrats posting strong results in Virginia, New Jersey and elsewhere. Coffee, beef and produce are imported in large volumes because domestic production cannot meet demand, making tariffs on them especially visible to consumers.

The rollback illustrated the political tension in the administration's tariff-heavy trade agenda: tariffs framed as protecting domestic industry and punishing rivals had also contributed to higher prices on staple goods, forcing a retreat on a symbolically important slice of the policy.
