Starlink Comes to the White House: When a Private Satellite Network Becomes Presidential Infrastructure

In mid-March 2025, reports confirmed that Elon Musk's Starlink satellite internet service had been made accessible across the White House complex, with officials saying the goal was to improve Wi-Fi coverage in areas where cell service and existing infrastructure were inadequate. Rather than physical hardware on-site, the system was routed through a White House data center using existing fiber connections.

The installation drew scrutiny given Musk's concurrent role leading the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) while running SpaceX, Starlink's parent company. Senator Elizabeth Warren and other Democratic lawmakers called for an investigation into potential conflicts of interest, and the episode gained added attention after a Musk employee working on it triggered a security alarm while accessing the roof of the Eisenhower Executive Office Building.

White House officials maintained the decision was a routine technical upgrade unrelated to Musk's federal role. Critics countered that installing a proprietary system from a politically influential ally's company, without competitive procurement, exemplified a broader blending of public and private interests.
