SpaceX Emerges as Front-Runner to Build Trump's 'Golden Dome' Missile Shield

By April 17, 2025, reporting showed Elon Musk's SpaceX, along with partners Palantir and Anduril, had emerged as the leading contender to build major components of Trump's proposed nationwide missile defense system, dubbed the "Golden Dome." The plan envisions hundreds to over a thousand satellites for missile detection and tracking, plus a separate constellation of attack satellites.

SpaceX reportedly proposed structuring its role as a government subscription service rather than traditional ownership, an approach that could bypass some standard Pentagon procurement steps and speed deployment.

The prospect of a Musk-led company winning a central role in a massive new defense program drew criticism given Musk's extensive existing government contracts and his prior formal advisory role in the administration. Officials stressed the selection process remained in early stages and could change substantially.
