U.S. Strike on a Caribbean Boat Kills Four, Bringing the Campaign Toll to 227 People in 68 Strikes
Joint Task Force Western Hemisphere struck a go-fast vessel in the Caribbean Sea on Aug. 25, killing four people, U.S. Southern Command said. It was the second strike in August, two days after a strike in the eastern Pacific killed two, and brings the total to at least 227 people killed in 68 strikes since Trump announced the first in September 2025. SOUTHCOM said "confirmed intelligence" showed the vessel's involvement in narco-trafficking and released video showing a moving boat followed by a flash.
The military did not identify those killed, give a precise location, or release evidence that the vessel carried drugs, a pattern across most statements in this campaign. Trump has said the United States is in an "armed conflict" with Latin American cartels.
Strikes resumed in late August after a pause of more than two months that has not been explained. CDC data do not show a significant decrease in fatal overdoses since the strikes began; overdose deaths have been declining since August 2023.
