More Than 60 Lawmakers Open a Probe Into Whether the Pentagon and DHS Are Coordinating to Deport Troops’ Families

More than 60 congressional Democrats sent a letter on the evening of August 9, 2026 to the Department of Homeland Security, the Defense Department and the Department of Veterans Affairs announcing an investigation into whether the Pentagon and DHS are coordinating to deport the families of U.S. service members. Led by Senator Elizabeth Warren’s office alongside Senators Richard Blumenthal and Tammy Duckworth and several House members, it follows an Associated Press investigation counting more than 50 detained spouses and parents of active-duty troops. The letter says the effort “imperil[s] military readiness, weaken[s] service members’ morale, and betray[s] America’s promises,” asks why recruiters still advertise immigration protections, and urges restoration of the prior shielding policies. The Pentagon said it would reply directly to the authors; DHS repeated that service alone does not confer status.

This is an oversight request from the minority party, carrying no compulsory process, but it establishes a documentary record and puts named questions to three departments. The Republican chairs of the armed services and veterans’ affairs committees did not respond to AP’s requests for comment.
