Signal Group Chat Exposes Operational Details of Yemen Strikes

Senior U.S. national-security officials discussed planned military strikes in Yemen within a Signal group chat that accidentally included a journalist, who then reported on the exchange. The messages reportedly contained operational timing and targeting information for the strikes.

The disclosure raised multiple concerns simultaneously: the use of an unapproved commercial messaging platform for sensitive military planning, potential violations of federal records-preservation requirements, and the risk that operational details could have been exposed to unauthorized parties, endangering the security of the planned operation and those carrying it out.

A Pentagon review later faulted Defense Secretary Hegseth over the Signal messages, according to reporting from December 2025, indicating an internal review found fault with his role in the episode.
