Senate Democrats Probe Whether Trump-Affiliated Companies Are Covered by the IRS Settlement

On July 7, 2026, CBS News reported that Senators Elizabeth Warren, Chuck Schumer and Ron Wyden had sent letters to 11 businesses tied to the Trump family asking whether they consider themselves covered by a May settlement between the Justice Department and President Trump. In that one-page agreement, dated May 19 and signed by Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche, the IRS and Treasury are "FOREVER BARRED and PRECLUDED" from pursuing any claims arising from tax returns filed before the settlement — and Blanche wrote that it applies to "parties including trusts, parent, sister, or related companies, affiliates, and subsidiaries." The letters went to the Trump Organization, Trump Media and Technology Group, World Liberty Financial, American Bitcoin, 1789 Capital, Kalshi, Polymarket, Powerus, Foundation Future Industries, Tag Air and Kaz Resources.

The question the senators raise is how far an immunity provision negotiated by the president's own Justice Department, resolving the president's own lawsuit, actually extends. DOJ said the release follows "standard practice" but declined to say which companies are covered.

The Democrats are in the minority and lack subpoena power, so the companies cannot be compelled to answer. No response from the companies had been reported.
