Ross Ulbricht Pardon Rewards a Major Crypto and Libertarian Cause

The day after taking office, Trump granted a full pardon to Ross Ulbricht, founder of the Silk Road online drug marketplace, who had been serving a life sentence for operating the site.

The pardon fulfilled a campaign promise that was popular among libertarian and cryptocurrency-aligned constituencies who viewed Ulbricht's sentence as disproportionate. It became an early example of clemency granted in direct response to demands from a specific political and ideological movement rather than through the case-by-case review processes traditionally used by the Justice Department's pardon office.

The pardon took immediate effect upon signing; available sourcing does not indicate any legal challenge to it.
