Princeton Refuses to Make a Deal and Half Its Frozen Grants Are Quietly Restored

Roughly $210 million in federal research grants to Princeton University from the Department of Energy, NASA, the Defense Department and other agencies were suspended from 2025-04-01. No specific list of demands was ever publicly issued to the university. President Christopher Eisgruber said explicitly that Princeton had made no agreement with the administration. By September 2025 approximately half of the suspended funding had been reinstated without explanation and without the university conceding anything.

Princeton is a significant case because it received the same category of financial pressure as institutions that settled but was never presented with terms, and recovered substantial funding without negotiating. That undercuts the premise that settlement was the only route to restoring research money.
