Pentagon Press Corps Surrenders Badges Rather Than Sign Hegseth's New Reporting Rules

On October 15, 2025, dozens of Pentagon correspondents turned in their access badges and walked out of the building rather than sign new Defense Department press rules. The 17-page policy, issued September 19 by Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell with an October 14 deadline, required journalists to agree not to release information gathered at the department — including unclassified material — without prior approval, barred unescorted movement through most of the building, and made credentials revocable for non-compliance. Major outlets including The New York Times and Politico refused to sign; One America News Network agreed to the terms. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth posted that "the 'press' does not run the Pentagon — the people do. The press is no longer allowed to roam the halls of a secure facility." The Pentagon Press Association called it "a dark day for press freedom."

Conditioning building access on advance clearance of unclassified reporting inverts the customary arrangement, in which credentialing governs physical access and classification governs what may be published.

The outlets continued covering the department from outside. Litigation and appeals over the policy followed in the months afterward.
