Pentagon Lowers Iran War Death Toll on Its Website From 18 to 14

The Defense Department on July 23, 2026 changed the casualty figure on its website for U.S. service members killed during the war with Iran, lowering the total from 18 to 14. Three military officials told The New York Times that one reason for the change was a decision to remove four service members killed the previous week, on the grounds that their deaths occurred after Trump declared a ceasefire in April.

The Pentagon's acting press secretary attributed the change to "temporary data disruptions" on the website and said it would be fixed. The discrepancy between the officials' account and the public explanation drew attention because casualty totals are among the most closely tracked official figures during wartime, and adjustments to them affect public understanding of a conflict's cost.

The change came amid continued U.S. strikes on Iran and days after administration officials briefed Congress on the war's costs.
