The Pentagon's Own Casualty Database Now Shows 757 Americans Wounded and 18 Killed in the Iran War

The Defense Department updated its Defense Casualty Analysis System on Aug. 19, adding more than 50 wounded service members, CNN reported. Combining the totals under "Overseas Operations" with those under Operation Epic Fury yields 18 dead and 757 wounded since the United States launched the war against Iran on Feb. 28. The department created the "Overseas Operations" category last month for casualties "starting July 7" and has not said which conflict they belong to. July 7 is the date the administration told Congress a new Iran conflict had begun.

Casualty tallies are the most basic public accounting of a war's cost, and splitting them across an unexplained category makes the total harder to read.

The update follows a period last month in which four deaths and dozens of injuries briefly disappeared from the database before being restored, which the department attributed to "temporary data disruptions."
