Pam Bondi Fires Justice Department Ethics Director

Attorney General Pam Bondi fired Joseph Tirrell, the Justice Department's ethics office director, in mid-July 2025 via a brief termination letter that gave no reason for his removal. Tirrell, a nearly 20-year career attorney who had advised officials including Special Counsel Jack Smith on conflict-of-interest matters, was dismissed the same day Bondi removed more than 20 other employees who had worked on investigations connected to Trump.

The firing matters because the ethics office is responsible for advising senior officials on conflicts of interest, a particularly sensitive function in an administration with extensive private business entanglements. Removing the person responsible for flagging ethical risks does not eliminate those risks; critics said it simply removes independent oversight.

The dismissal fit a broader pattern of the administration narrowing internal accountability mechanisms across federal agencies, including inspectors general and compliance staff, reinforcing concerns that oversight roles are being weakened when their findings become inconvenient.
