Navy Is Reportedly Weighing Stripping a Black Pearl Harbor Hero's Name From a Carrier and Giving It to Trump

The Navy is working to rename the aircraft carrier under construction as the USS Doris Miller, three sources familiar with internal discussions told CNN on Aug. 20, and two said there have been internal conversations about renaming it for President Trump. Miller, a mess attendant at Pearl Harbor, was the first Black sailor awarded the Navy Cross and died in action in 1943. He is now being recommended for the Medal of Honor.

Naming a carrier for a sitting president would be unprecedented. NAACP President Derrick Johnson called the reported talks "a slap in the face to every war hero."

The Navy has confirmed nothing and referred questions to the Office of the Secretary of Defense, which said it had nothing to announce. A keel-laying ceremony is expected this year.
