Mexican Man Dies in ICE Custody at Laredo Facility, Seventh Texas Detention Death This Year
Emiliano Andrade-Covarrubias, 56, a Mexican national who had lived in Dallas for decades, was found unresponsive during a security check at ICE's Rio Grande Processing Center in Laredo on October 18, 2026, and died after staff attempted CPR. His daughter says he had diabetes, a heart condition, and high blood pressure, had reported chest tightness and trouble breathing beforehand, and says he was denied medication, an unverified claim.
He is the seventh person to die in ICE custody in Texas this year and the second at a Laredo-area facility, adding to a detainee death toll watchdogs link to reduced medical oversight amid record detention levels.
The Webb County Medical Examiner is conducting an autopsy; ICE and facility operator GEO Group had not publicly addressed the death as of this report.
