Meta Pays $25 Million to Settle Trump Lawsuit Over Suspended Accounts

In late January 2025, Meta agreed to pay $25 million to settle a four-year-old lawsuit brought by Donald Trump over the suspension of his social media accounts following the January 6, 2021, Capitol riot. Of that sum, $22 million was directed toward funding Trump's future presidential library, with the remainder covering legal fees and other plaintiffs. Meta did not admit wrongdoing as part of the deal.

The settlement capped a period of visible rapprochement between Meta and Trump. CEO Mark Zuckerberg attended the inauguration, made multiple visits to Mar-a-Lago, and had already rolled back the company's fact-checking program and diversity initiatives in the preceding weeks.

The episode illustrates how a major platform resolved a politically charged legal dispute with a sitting president through a large payment rather than continued litigation, at a moment when Trump had also threatened tech companies with regulatory and antitrust action. Critics viewed the settlement as evidence that platform decisions are increasingly shaped by political leverage rather than consistent, neutral standards.
