Mass Firing of Inspectors General Removes Independent Watchdogs

On January 24, 2025, Trump abruptly dismissed at least 17 inspectors general across major federal departments without providing the 30-day advance notice and detailed, case-specific reasons to Congress that federal law requires for such removals.

Inspectors general serve as independent watchdogs responsible for investigating fraud, waste, abuse and misconduct within their respective agencies, largely insulated from ordinary political control to preserve their independence. Removing a large group simultaneously and without the statutory process eliminated this oversight capacity across much of the executive branch at once, raising concerns about the erosion of independent accountability mechanisms within agencies.

A federal court later ruled the firings unlawful, according to reporting from September 2025, finding that the dismissals did not comply with the statutory notice requirements.
