Kristi Noem Lives Rent-Free in Coast Guard Commandant's Waterfront Home

In August 2025, reporting revealed that DHS Secretary Kristi Noem had been living rent-free in a waterfront military home at Joint Base Anacostia-Bolling normally reserved for the Coast Guard's top admiral. DHS said the arrangement was necessary because Noem had been doxxed and could not safely live in her own apartment, though other cabinet officials who live on military bases, including Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, pay rent.

The arrangement drew scrutiny because the property exists to support Coast Guard operational and security needs, not routine cabinet housing, and no public justification was given for why standard DHS security arrangements were insufficient. Senator Richard Blumenthal and House Democrats sent letters demanding oversight hearings and additional details on the arrangement, including scrutiny of Noem's use of a Coast Guard aircraft.
