Around the time of his Senate confirmation hearing in early February 2025, it emerged that FBI director nominee Kash Patel had worked as a paid consultant for the Embassy of Qatar through his firm, Trishul LLC, until November 2024, earning a reported $2.1 million through the firm. Patel had not registered under the Foreign Agents Registration Act and had not disclosed the arrangement on his Senate nominee questionnaire, prompting a formal complaint to the Justice Department's FARA unit from the watchdog group Public Citizen.

The lapse drew scrutiny because the FBI director oversees counterintelligence and foreign-influence matters, making an undisclosed financial relationship with a foreign government especially sensitive. Patel was confirmed regardless, and the FBI's ethics office later issued a waiver permitting him to work on matters involving Qatar despite the prior client relationship.

Ethics observers said the episode reflected a broader pattern of incomplete financial disclosure among nominees in the administration, with compliance addressed only after outside pressure rather than proactively.
