Trump Administration Clears Path to Deport Anti-Disinformation Researcher Imran Ahmed

U.S. District Judge Loretta Preska in Manhattan on Sept. 8, 2026 dismissed a lawsuit by Imran Ahmed, the British-born CEO of the U.S.-based Center for Countering Digital Hate, that had sought to block the Trump administration from detaining and deporting him. Preska said Ahmed "very well may have valid causes of action," but ruled that a recent appellate decision left her without jurisdiction to hear his First Amendment and due process claims. She kept an earlier restraining order in place for five business days to allow Ahmed to pursue an appeal.

The administration barred Ahmed's entry last year and later moved to deport him, accusing him of working to censor free speech and unfairly target U.S. tech companies through his research into online disinformation and hate speech. Free speech advocates say the case fits a broader pattern of the administration using immigration authority against researchers, activists and green-card holders over their political views and advocacy rather than any criminal conduct.

The dismissal opens the door to Ahmed's detention once the five-business-day window lapses. Ahmed, who lives in Washington and whose wife and child are U.S. citizens, had not said as of publication whether he would appeal.
