Trump Ally Joe DiGenova Resigns From DOJ's Stalled Probe of Obama and Biden Officials
Joe diGenova, the prosecutor Attorney General Todd Blanche installed in April 2026 to oversee the Justice Department's "grand conspiracy" investigation into Obama- and Biden-era officials, abruptly resigned on September 10, 2026, submitting his letter to Blanche at 3 p.m. His wife and fellow prosecutor on the case, Victoria Toensing, left the department the following day. DiGenova declined to give CBS News a reason for his departure.
The probe, run out of Fort Pierce, Florida, has examined whether former officials including ex-CIA Director John Brennan conspired to keep Trump from returning to office, and has not produced any indictments in the five months diGenova ran it; he had replaced a previous prosecutor who was removed after raising concerns about the evidence's strength. Brennan has separately sued, alleging the investigation reflects a policy of "using criminal process and prosecution to punish the President's perceived adversaries."
The Justice Department thanked diGenova for his service. The investigation continues under the Fort Pierce U.S. Attorney's office without him.
